Mama (Evangelist) Mary Mandi is a pioneer of Cameroonian gospel music, a devoted worship leader, and a vessel of divine inspiration. With a career spanning over five decades, her soulful voice and Pidgin English ministrations have touched millions across Central Africa and beyond. 😊

Born with music in her veins, Mary Mandi’s roots in praise run deep through generations. Her mother was a singer and gifted dancer, while her grandfather was a traditional musician who played the menang (xylophone). By age four, young Mary Mandi was already composing her own songs. As a young girl, her passion for music led her to practice rhythms on a neighbor’s old one-stringed guitar after finishing her homework.

In the mid-1970s, Mary committed her life to Jesus Christ, a decision that permanently directed her musical gifts toward gospel ministry. She joined the choir at the Full Gospel Church in Tiko, where she played church drums and began formal training in music at the Apostolic Church Music School in Kumba.

A Pioneer’s Breakthrough: "Na Weti Be Man"

During an era when gospel music in Cameroon was largely confined to formal church hymnals, Mary felt a divine calling to bridge the gap between faith and culture. She prayed for a song in Pidgin English so everyday people could hear and understand the Gospel message.

God answered her prayer in the late 1980s with the hit song "Na Weti Be Man".

"Life without God, life without the Holy Spirit—all is vanity." — Mama Mary Monday 🔥

Recorded in a humble voice studio in Bamenda with just a single box guitar and keyboard, the song exploded across radio and television stations throughout Cameroon. It transformed lives, inspired backslidden believers, and led directly to testimonies of listeners dedicating their lives to Christ to become pastors and evangelists.

Being a pioneer rarely comes without hardship. As one of Cameroon's earliest female gospel recording artists, Mama Mary faced widespread skepticism from churches unaccustomed to modern gospel styles. Early in her ministry, after bringing her freshly pressed cassettes to church, she and her fellow singer were suspended by their pastor for three months under the mistaken belief that they were commercializing the gospel.

Rather than becoming bitter, Mama Mary embraced the discipline as a period of prayer and consecration. Her perseverance opened doors for generations of Cameroonian gospel musicians who followed in her footsteps.

She attributes all glory to God, w&rning younger artists that applause and public acclaim must always be surrendered to the Lord. Till date,  she continues to mentor emerging gospel artists and serve the Body of Christ with the same passion that ignited her journey as a young girl.
