CAMEROON TRIBALISM VS NATIONALISM; Pastor Anita Etta Speak πŸ—£️ πŸ‡¨πŸ‡²πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‘‡

One of our greatest challenges as Cameroonians is that we possess a deep, almost instinctive sense of tribal pride, yet very little sense of national identity. When a typical Cameroonian hears their language, sees their traditional dance, or recognizes their local cuisine, the excitement is immediate and unmistakable but that enthusiasm often fades when it comes from outside their tribe. When our tribes call, we often respond without hesitation.

In fact, if you want to succeed as a singer in Cameroon, one of the easiest paths is to perform songs rooted in your tribe and your people will likely rise and support you wholeheartedly. Many individuals achieve remarkable things yet go largely unnoticed, until their tribal identity becomes known. Suddenly, support surges, not necessarily because of the achievement itself, but because of shared origin. Most Camers will often tolerate mediocrity if the perpetrator is from their tribe!

In short, tribalism remains a dominant force, and it continues to hinder our collective progress as a nation. Tribal pride, while meaningful, is not sufficient on its own to position us competitively on the global stage. With over 200 tribes, this deep-rooted loyalty often fragments rather than unifies us. Perhaps if we were a single tribe, such loyalty might strengthen us nationally but in our current reality with so many small tribes, it tends to divide.

Let me get spiritual; tribalism is the we@pon fashioned against Cameroon! It is a force that keeps us from standing together to confront and overcome our shared national challenges. If you read this as a Camer, search yourself! You may not realize how tribalistic you are. You may even deny it to yourself. I live in America and the typical American is first an American before anything else. We must be honest in admitting this weakness and start thinking about how to develop a sense of national identity above our tribal identity otherwise we may remain in the rot we are in for a very long time. May God help us!
