Elizabeth Tekeh is a songwriter and music evangelist whose voice rose from obscurity to shape the sound of gospel music in Cameroon in the early 2000s. She stands today as one of the most influential female worship voices of her generation, a woman whose songs were forged at the altar of sacrifice and endurance.
Born in Ekona in the early 1970s, with both parents hailing from Adere village in the North West Region, she was known as Elizabeth Fishi before taking the name Tekeh from her husband, Martin Tekeh, by which she is now widely known.
By her own testimony, her formal education ended abruptly at the primary school level when her father threatened to commit suicide if she continued pressing him over school fees. What appeared to be an interruption was, however, one of those early wounds through which God would later channel future grace.
After leaving school, she learned tailoring, married, and settled quietly in Munyenge, which she often refers to as “Banga bush.” There, she encountered Christ at a tender age with the FGM. Yet hidden within this ordinary setting was an extraordinary calling waiting to be unveiled. Drawn by the witness and ministry of gospel trailblazers such as Evangelist Mary Mandi, Elizabeth Tekeh stepped into music ministry in the early 2000s.
She has consistently testified that her songs overflow from a burning passion to win souls and to help people encounter the faithfulness and goodness of God as she herself had encountered Him. Her debut album, Jesus Is My Security, released in 2004, announced her to the nation and beyond. This was followed in 2006 by Naked I Came to This World, and later projects, bringing her total body of work to six albums.
As with many vessels rising under divine spotlight, fierce resistance followed. In 2013, waves of persecution erupted as false accusations were fabricated, alleging ritual practices and arrest, all in a calculated attempt to silence her voice. Yet the fire did not consume her; it purified her. Refusing to retreat, she answered slander with song through the release of yet another album.
Rather than allowing limited formal education to restrain her reach, she turned it into a prophetic advantage. By ministering largely in Pidgin English, she broke elitist barriers and ensured that the gospel she sang could be understood by all, learned and unlearned alike. In doing so, her voice became the voice of the common people, echoing across markets, homes, and congregations.
From grass to grace, Elizabeth Tekeh has become a household name, earning multiple awards. She has consistently paid tribute to the Holy Spirit for inspiration and to her husband, Martin Tekeh, a FGM pastor and cocoa farmer, who believed in the vision God placed in her and invested sacrificially in her music ministry.
She now resides with her husband and children in the City of Hospitality, Buea, a living testimony that God delights in choosing unlikely vessels for His glory and clothing them with extraordinary grace. Elizabeth Tekeh stands as a witness that a good marriage is a springboard for ministry, and that when obedience meets endurance, God can transform adversity and humble beginnings into generational impact
