The Government of Cameroon has officially authorized eight new churches to operate in the country following a series of presidential decrees signed by President Paul Biya.
The move marks a significant moment in the regulation and recognition of religious organizations, particularly within the evangelical and Pentecostal space.
Among the newly authorized churches are Winners Chapel International, founded by Bishop David Oyedepo, and The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), founded by Pastor E.A. Adeboye in Lagos, Nigeria. Their approval grants full legal status to two of Africa’s most influential charismatic movements, both of which have maintained a growing presence in Cameroon over the years.
Other churches granted authorization include the Russian Orthodox Church of Cameroon, Reformed Overcomers Chapel, Église Évangélique Libre du Cameroun, Mission Chrétienne de l’Espérance – Maison de Prière, Chapelle de la Gloire du Christ, and Communauté Missionnaire Chrétienne Internationale.
These approvals follow strong warnings issued last year by the Minister of Territorial Administration (MINAT), who threatened to shut down all unregistered churches operating across the country. Before this latest development, official records indicate that only 47 churches had been legally authorized to function nationwide.
This development signals a new dawn for the Pentecostal landscape of Cameroon and offers renewed hope that many more churches may receive official authorization in the future, fostering order, accountability, and stability within the nation’s expanding Christian community.
