BEWARE OF TEMPTATION THE DEVIL’S SCHEME TO DESTRUCTION
SCRIPTURE : LUKE 22:31-34,40-46.
We saw from the text above Jesus was cautioning His disciples against temptation.
According to James 1:13, "When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone." Note that James does not say, "If you are tempted," but rather he says, "WHEN you are tempted." James was certain that temptation will be a reality in every Christian life. Like us, James had dealt with temptation in his own life and knew this truth from experience.
No one reading this sermon can say that you live above temptation. In fact, no one reading this sermon can claim he or she has had total victory over temptation. At one point in life we have falling into temptation.
Temptation is a sense or desire to do something that is wrong or sinful against God.
In Matthew Account in chapter 4:1-11 Jesus was faced with temptation in the wilderness. Christ overcame the devil by holding grounds on God's word. In verse 10 Jesus rebuked Satan " Get thee hence, Satan: for its written, thou shall worship ......"
A Christian should never say the following when facing temptation;
▪︎“I am being tempted by God”
James 1:13
“For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.”
▪︎There is no way out of this temptation but to yield to it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
“But when you are tempted, God will provide a way out so that you can stand up underneath it.
▪︎I am the only one who has ever been tempted like this.
1 Corinthians 10:13a
“… no temptation has seized you except what is common to man.”
▪︎This temptation is too strong for me to resist.
1 John 4:4
“The one who is in you is greater than the one that is in the world.”
In Genesis 39:11-12 Joseph fled from Potiphar’s wife to avoid sexual intercourse (sin). This credited him a clean sheet in the eyes of God.
To overcome temptation, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we also need to avoid temptation, and we need to flee from temptation.
There is no temptation that comes with promotion but every temptation is aimed at a fall like in the garden if Eden, disgrace like Samson and shame like King Saul.
As a child of God you can pray and ask God to deliver you from temptation and you must seek to avoid the same.
Matthew 6:13 (The Lord’s Prayer) says" Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
We are to pray to be strong during moments of temptation as Christ instructed His disciples.
Beloved in the Lord during moment of temptation there is always a small voice ( The Don't voice) talking to you .Harken to the voice. That's God talking to you. Yield to that voice and get closer to God always.
James 4:7-8
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.
God Bless you.
