Theological, there are five things that can drive your life. The first one is the FLESH, the second one is the WORLD, the third one is SIN, the fourth one is SATAN and the last one is SELF.
SELF is very bad for example, someone that is in choir might not be in choir because he or she wants to sing for God, but because he wants to project himself and that is called SELF and it is still the driving force. In the realm of the spirit, self does not strike a cord. Most people their motivation in service is SELF.
The only valid operating or driving system is the holy Spirit. You will notice that after Jesus was baptized, and an accreditation came from heaven, and the father said "This is my beloved son in whom am well pleased" and the next instruction Jesus received was to go into the wilderness and be tempted by the devil.
Man was designed to live by the proceeding word of God, Instructions that is coming from the mouth of God, so man should not live by bread alone, but to live by the instructions that comes out of the mouth of God..
Your ability to act apart from God is a disclaimer to your call to holiness because you are supposed to be one with Christ, it is what Christ is doing that you should be doing, it is what he is showing you that you are performing, your life is what he says it is and nothing more.
